Framed Print of Lanternfish (Diaphus rafinesquii)

Lanternfishes of the family Myctophidae comprise an important part of the "deep scattering layer or DSL. The DSL is a community of deep water wildlife that migrates, every day, to shallower waters to feed on plankton at night. They return to the depths by day. It is the largest migration of wildlife on the planet, and it happens every 24 hrs. Lanternfishes are often deciphered by the number of and arrangement of the photophores on their heads and bodies. This individual (Diaphus rafinesquii) was trawled in the Gulf of Mexico, 2016, from between 1, 500 and 1, 200 meters depth. Image courtesy of the DEEPEND project. © Dante Fenolio / Science Source
