Each species of Lanternfish (family Myctophidae) has its own number and arrangement of photophores. Presumably, the fish can use the species specific lights to identify members of its own species in the deep dark waters where they live. Further, this species of Diaphus has photophores on the front of its face. The larger photophores may be used in prey location. This specimen was trawled at 600 meters depth in the Gulf of Mexico, 2010. © Dante Fenolio / Science Source
