Framed Print of Mount Fuji, The Great Wave, 1830s
The Great Wave off Kanagawa, also known as The Great Wave or The Wave, is a woodblock print by the Japanese ukiyo-e artist Hokusai. The first print in Hokusai's series Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji. shows a huge wave bearing down on boats. Mount Fuji is a frequent subject of Japanese art especially after 1600, when Edo (Tokyo) became the capital and people saw the mountain while traveling on the Tokaido road. The mountain is mentioned in Japanese literature throughout the ages and is the subject of many poems. Mount Fuji is an active stratovolcano located near the Pacific coast of Honshu and one of Japan's "Three Holy Mountains".
