Dragonfish are among the most fierce of the deep sea dwellers in appearance. This species, Eustomias schmidti, has a lure, a luminous organ attached to the end of a rod like barbel, which is attached to the lower jaw. In theory, the dragonfish wiggles the glowing lure to attract prey. Anything of appropriate size that comes within striking distance is dinner. Notice the spots on the side of the fish. Those structures are also photophores. The glowing structures may serve in species recognition. This dragonfish was roughly a seven inches in total length and was trawled from between the surface and 700 meters depth. © Dante Fenolio / Science Source
