Framed Print of "The History of the Standard Oil Company", 1904

One of the most effective attacks on Rockefeller and his firm was the 1904 publication of The History of the Standard Oil Company, by Ida Tarbell, a leading muckraker. She documented the company's espionage, price wars, heavy-handed marketing tactics, and courtroom evasions. John Davison Rockefeller (July 8, 1839 - May 23, 1937) was an American industrialist, philanthropist and the first American worth more than a billion dollars. Adjusting for inflation, he is often regarded as the richest person in history. He spent the last 40 years of his life in retirement. His fortune was mainly used to create the modern systematic approach of targeted philanthropy. Frank Arthur Nankivell for Puck and published by Keppler and Schwarzmann, March 14, 1906. © NYPL / Science Source
