This dragonfish (Astronesthes macropogon), was collected in the Gulf of Mexico between 1, 000 and 600 meters depth, 2016. The species has been collected from as deep as 2, 000 meters. This species has a distinctive light organ below each eye and rows of photophores running down its sides. The barbel has a lure at the end of it that glows in the dark and is used to attract prey items to within striking range of the dragonfish.
