Framed Print of Deep-Sea Google-Eye
The Google-eye, Xenophthalmichthys danae, from the family Microstomatidae, has been found in the tropical Pacific and Atlantac Oceans, including the Gulf of Mexico. It has been captured down to depth approaching 1600 meters. Nothing has been reported on its biology or ecology except for the fact that it does not apparently have a swim bladder. The body of this fish is long and slender (to 10 cm), with a silvery, metallic color. It has large, forward facing eyes and a small mouth. The eyes may be used to detect bioluminescence. This individual was captured between 900 meters depth and the surface in the Gulf of Mexico, 2011. © Dante Fenolio / Science Source
