Framed Print of Lev Landau, Soviet physicist
Lev Davidovich Landau (1908-1968), Soviet physicist. Landau was a theoretician who made important contributions to quantum mechanics, diamagnetism, superfluidity, superconductivity and plasma physics. In 1962 he received the Nobel Prize in Physics for his work on superfluidity and the properties of liquid helium. Landau was born in Azerbaijan, studied in Leningrad (now St Petersburg), and worked abroad before returning to the USSR to work near Moscow. From 1937 to 1962 he led a theoretical research institute that is now called the Landau Institute for Theoretical Physics in his honour. He was severely injured in a car crash in 1962, and never fully recovered, dying six years later. Photographed in June 1965.
