Gross specimen of kidney scarred by hypertension
Effects of hypertension on the kidney. Hypertension (high blood pressure) has caused atrophy and scarring. The normal smooth appearance has been replaced by noduled surface and necrosing areas at the pelvis of the kidney. The kidneys are especially vulnerable to the changes to blood vessels that occur in hypertension. In chronic hypertension the arteriole walls are thickened. The resulting reduced renal blood flow causes chronic ischaemia and gradual atrophy of the tubules. Slow progressive loss of functioning nephrons may eventually lead to chronic renal failure and the kind of shrunken end-stage kidney seen here

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print from Science Photo Library depicts the devastating effects of hypertension on a kidney. The once smooth and healthy organ has been scarred and atrophied due to high blood pressure. The noduled surface and necrosing areas at the pelvis of the kidney are clear indications of the damage caused by this condition. Hypertension poses a significant threat to our kidneys, as it leads to thickening of arteriole walls, reducing renal blood flow and causing chronic ischaemia. This gradual process eventually results in tubular atrophy, leading to a slow loss of functioning nephrons. If left untreated, this progressive decline can ultimately lead to chronic renal failure, as exemplified by the shrunken end-stage kidney showcased in this image. The intricate network of blood vessels within our kidneys makes them particularly vulnerable to the detrimental changes brought about by hypertension. As we observe this gross specimen closely, we witness firsthand how hypertensive damage manifests itself through malig hyper nephrosclerosis and fibrinoid necrosis. It is essential for us all to be aware of these consequences and take proactive measures in managing our blood pressure levels effectively. Through education and proper healthcare interventions, we can strive towards preventing such dire outcomes for our vital organs like the kidneys.
