Workers in the aircraft component repair department during the Second World War. The workers are thought to be making parts for aircraft wings, probably for Spitfires, in what was the H.T.P. Motors showroom. Aircraft repair staff comprised 100 operatives, 50% of which were women. At their peak they produced 500 components a month for Spitfires, including tail planes and rudders. In 2018, this building is the Pannier Market on Back Quay, Truro. Photographer: Unknown

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print takes us back to the year 1941, amidst the chaos of the Second World War. We find ourselves in Truro, Cornwall, inside the machine shop of H. T. P. Motors Ltd. , which was located on Back Quay at that time. The workers captured in this image are diligently engaged in their tasks within the aircraft component repair department. It is believed that these skilled individuals were meticulously crafting parts for aircraft wings, most likely destined for iconic Spitfires. Interestingly, this bustling workshop was once a showroom for H. T. P. Motors before being transformed into an essential hub for wartime production. What makes this historical snapshot even more remarkable is that it showcases a workforce ahead of its time - women constituted an impressive 50% of the 100-strong team responsible for repairing and manufacturing aircraft components. Together, they reached astonishing heights by producing around 500 crucial parts each month exclusively for Spitfires. These included tail planes and rudders vital to maintaining air superiority during those tumultuous years. Fast forward to present day Truro in 2018, and this very building has undergone a transformation of its own - now known as Pannier Market on Back Quay. While we may not know who precisely captured this powerful moment frozen in time, it serves as a poignant reminder of Cornwall's significant contributions during WWII and honors those unsung heroes who played their part behind-the-scenes at H. T. P Motors Ltd. 's machine shop.
