Flooding, Queen Street, Lostwithiel, Cornwall. November 1986

Clearing up after flooding affected Queen Street, Lostwithiel. The leat which runs beside and underneath Tanhouse Road and South Street to the River Fowey was blocked with silt and debris after heavy rains. The worst affected shop premises were the Baron Restaurant, Patterson Antiques and Stick shoe shop. The flood held up traffic from the St Austell and Liskeard directions for the whole of the day. EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the aftermath of a devastating flood that struck Queen Street in Lostwithiel, Cornwall, back in November 1986. The image showcases the resilience and determination of the local community as they come together to clear up after this natural disaster. The flooding was caused by heavy rains that resulted in the leat beside Tanhouse Road and South Street becoming blocked with silt and debris. As a result, several businesses along Queen Street suffered significant damage, including the Baron Restaurant, Patterson Antiques, and Stick shoe shop. In this snapshot frozen in time by photographer Jonathan Barker, we see firefighters from the fire service working tirelessly to restore normalcy. Armed with hosepipes and equipped with muddy boots on a waterlogged road, these brave individuals are seen battling against adversity. A JCB bucket tractor can be spotted amidst the chaos; its presence symbolizes hope for those affected by providing much-needed assistance in clearing away debris. This Cornish scene is a testament to both human strength and nature's power. The impact of this flood extended beyond just local businesses; it also disrupted traffic from St Austell and Liskeard directions throughout the entire day. The challenges faced by residents were immense but their spirit remained unbroken. As we reflect upon this historic event captured through Jonathan Barker's lens at Royal Cornwall Museum, let us remember not only the destruction caused but also how communities rally together during times of crisis.
