A surfer carrying his board walks out of the ocean as a cloud is lit by the setting

A surfer carrying his board walks out of the ocean as a cloud is lit by the setting sun at Sydneys Manly Beach October 24, 2006. Climate change in Sydney will cause a significant rise in heat-related deaths of people over 65 years of age by 2050, as Australias biggest city suffers more heat waves, bushfires and floods, a new environment report released on January 31, 2007 says. The report by Australias premier scientific body, the Commonwealth Scientific & Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO), forecast heat-related deaths for elderly people would rise from the current 176 a year to 1, 312 by 2050. Rising sea levels will result in coastal erosion of up to 22 metres (66 feet) for a strip of beaches from Collaroy to Narrabeen in Sydneys north, eating away at many multi-million dollar homes now perched on the edge of the beach. Australia is already feeling the brunt of global warming with the worst drought in 100 years eating into economic growth. The CSIRO report found Sydneys maximum temperature was expected to rise 1.6 degrees Celsius by 2030 and 4.8 degrees by 2070 and average rainfall will drop by 40 percent by 2070. EDITORS COMMENTS
In this photo print, a surfer gracefully emerges from the ocean, carrying his board as he walks towards the shore. The scene is illuminated by the warm glow of the setting sun, casting a golden hue on everything it touches. However, behind this picturesque moment lies a stark reminder of the challenges Sydney faces due to climate change. According to a report released by Australia's premier scientific body, CSIRO, Sydney will experience an alarming increase in heat-related deaths among its elderly population by 2050. Currently standing at 176 per year, this number is projected to skyrocket to 1,312 as heatwaves become more frequent and intense. This sobering statistic serves as a wake-up call for urgent action against global warming. Furthermore, rising sea levels pose another threat to Sydney's coastal areas. The report predicts that beaches stretching from Collaroy to Narrabeen could suffer erosion up to 22 meters (66 feet), endangering luxurious homes built along their edges. As Australia grapples with its worst drought in a century and dwindling economic growth due to climate impacts, these findings shed light on the urgency of addressing environmental issues. The photograph captured on October 24th, 2006 encapsulates both serenity and impending danger—a juxtaposition that symbolizes our delicate relationship with nature and emphasizes the need for sustainable practices moving forward.
