EDITORS COMMENTS
This print takes us back to the year 1939, when the London & North Eastern Railway (LNER) sought to entice travelers with a stunning poster promoting rail travel to the Western Highlands of Scotland. The artwork, skillfully created by Frank Henry Mason, transports us even further into history as it depicts an iconic moment from July 1745. The scene showcases Prince Charles Stuart, affectionately known as Bonnie Prince Charlie, making his fateful landing at Loch-Nan-Uamh. This significant event marked the beginning of his ill-fated invasion of England. Mason's attention to detail and artistic prowess beautifully captures this historical moment in time. Mason himself had a fascinating background that undoubtedly influenced his ability to bring maritime scenes to life on canvas. Having been educated at HMS Conway and spending considerable time at sea, he possessed firsthand knowledge and experience which shines through in his marine and coastal subjects. As we gaze upon this remarkable print from the National Railway Museum's Pictorial Collection, we are transported not only through time but also across vast landscapes. It serves as a reminder of both the allure of train travel during its golden age and the rich history that lies within Scotland's Western Highlands.
