EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases an original oil painting created in the 1930s for the London, Midland & Scottish Railway (LMS) to promote rail services to Blackpool, Lancashire. The artwork, skillfully crafted by Fortunino Matania, a talented artist originally from Naples, Italy but later based in Paris and London, captures the essence of Blackpool's vibrant beach scene. In this picturesque depiction, we are transported back in time to witness a bustling day at Blackpool beach. The shores are teeming with people adorned in colorful swimming costumes or fashionable summer attire. Their joyous expressions and animated conversations create an atmosphere of excitement and leisure. Matania's attention to detail is evident as he masterfully portrays every aspect of this coastal resort town. From the iconic towers that punctuate the skyline to the lively seaside promenades that wind their way along the shore, each element adds depth and charm to this magnificent composition. It is worth noting that King George V himself was so enamored by Matania's exceptional talent that he personally invited him to accompany his tour of India. This speaks volumes about Matania's prowess as an artist and his ability to capture scenes with such authenticity. As we admire this remarkable piece of artistry preserved by the National Railway Museum, it serves as a reminder not only of Blackpool's allure but also of how railway posters were once used as powerful tools for promoting travel destinations across Britain.
