Mrs. Annie Pepperday, a miners wife of Selston, Notts, asked us to put on a fashion show in her own village, using local girls as models. Her idea was to prove that the smashing girls of this little colliery village can be every bit as glamorous as the most elegant women of London--with the right clothes. Well, Mrs. Pepperday got her fashion show. We hired the Miners Welfare Hall for £ 3 2s. 6d. and borrowed a platform from the Co-op. We got music: cheese and onion rolls for the interval: flowers; and a charming man to work the curtains and turn a blind eye on girls running about in their brassieres. We asked professional fashion compere Norma Ward to describe the clothes. In fact, we did everything for an elegant show except invite the Queen Mother. And that wouldn t have been a bad idea, either, because it turned out the best fashion show ever-thanks to the girls. Not one of them had modelled before. But they were great. They laughed more than trained models, which would never have done for Dior. But it was O K by Selston. Flair. What did the Selston Fashion show prove? First, I think, that Mrs. Pepperdays claim wasn t far out. The rate of good-looking girls in Selston is high, and they have a real flair for wearing clothes. Sixteen-year-old Brenda Blood kicked aside the long train of her evening gown skilfully. I fancy myself in this, she said. I feel better in it than in trousers and a skid-lid. Behind the scenes were Douglas Young, chief make-up artist at Max Factor, and John Barnet, of the Dumas Hair Salons. Mr. Young urged the girls to wear eye make-up. You d all look Naked in London, he said, lashing on the mascara. Last word on the show came from a miner who got himself a front-row seat and never moved-not even for a beer.
