This Gloster Mars Bamel piloted by Capt Jimmy James, the test pilot of Gloster aircraft, taking-off from Hendon at the start Aerial Derby on 16th July 1921, a month after the aircrafts first flight.
The race went from Hendon to Brooklands and Epsom in Surrey and from there to West Thurrock and Epping in Essex before returning to Hendon via Hertford.
Jimmy James won the race with a speed of 163 mph; the Home Secretary presented him with a trophy and prize money of £ 600 - worth over £ 50, 000 today.
