During his visit the Air Chief Marshal met three Spitfire pilots who had been forced down in the Caen area when their aircraft were hit by flak. The pilots had found their way to the air strip the Air Commander-in-Chef was using, and on hearing that they were anxious to return to
England immediately, he offered them a lift back
in his own aircraft.

In this historic photograph captured in June 1944, we see the esteemed Air Chief Marshal meeting three courageous Spitfire pilots who had been forced down in the Caen area due to enemy flak. During his visit to France, Leigh-Mallory conferred with General Montgomery and visited RAF men operating from French soil.
