His career, which spanned more than 50 years, saw him work for Benjamin Britten and Michael Tippett and perform alongside renowned contemporaries such as Rebecca Evans, Janet Baker and John Shirley-Quirk. Tear, who has died aged 72, was born in Barry on March 8, 1939, to Thomas and Edith Tear
