Instead of a wooden barrow with tarpaulin roof, housewives chose fruit and vegetables from metal shelves, had it weighed on built-in automatic scales and handed to them by assistants in white coats. We got browned off with the old stall said Albert Brunt, Junior 20, pictured serving. Albert who runs the stall for his father, added; We decided to go all modern and sell cleanliness as well as cabbages. The result is a gleaming aluminium stall on a rubber-tyred undercarriage. It cost £ 200. Its a family business said Albert Dad buys the stuff. Brother George and I sell it. My Uncle Fred, a carpenter built it for us. But bad news awaits the Brunts. The stall is more than 2ft. over the maximum permitted length of 9ft. An added piece of metal counter which they clip on one end of the stall will have to come off within a reasonable time. 3rdb March 1949. © Mirrorpix
