Born in 1585, Boyd lived through a period of significant religious and political change in Scotland. Boyd's life and career were marked by his unwavering commitment to the Reformed faith, which had taken root in Scotland following the Protestant Reformation. He studied at the University of Glasgow and later at the University of Marburg in Germany, where he was deeply influenced by the teachings of the Reformed theologian, Johann Albrecht Widmannstätten. Upon his return to Scotland, Boyd became a prominent figure in the Scottish Reformed Church, serving as a minister in various parishes before being appointed as the Minister of Glasgow in 1628. During his tenure in Glasgow, he played a crucial role in the city's religious and educational life, overseeing the establishment of a grammar school and advocating for the use of the Scottish Psalter in worship. Boyd's ministry was not without controversy, however. He was a vocal critic of the English-imposed episcopacy in Scotland and was imprisoned several times for his outspokenness. Despite these challenges, Boyd remained steadfast in his faith and continued to serve his congregation until his death in 1653.
