EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning handcolored copperplate stipple engraving, created between 1816 and 1830, showcases two intricately detailed bird species: the Yellowhammer (Emberiza citrinella) and the Dickcissel (Spiza americana). The illustration is taken from the esteemed "Dictionnaire de Natural Sciences: Ornithologie" by Dumont de Sainte-Croix, published by F.G. Levrault in Paris, France. The Yellowhammer, a resident of Europe, is depicted on the left side of the print. With its vibrant yellow plumage, distinctive black mask, and a bold red patch on its nape, this bird is a true beauty. The artist, Jean Gabriel Pretre (1780-1845), masterfully captured the intricacies of the Yellowhammer's feathers, creating a lifelike image. On the right side of the print, the Dickcissel, a New World bird, is depicted. With its striking orange-red face, black mask, and yellow underparts, this bird is a visual treat. Pretre's attention to detail is evident in the Dickcissel's textured feathers and the precise rendering of its beak and legs. The engraving process, executed by M. Bourey under the direction of Pierre Jean-Francois Turpin, adds an additional layer of depth and texture to the illustration. The use of handcoloring further enhances the vibrancy and realism of the print. Pretre, a painter of natural history at Empress Josephine's zoo, later became the artist to the Museum of Natural History in Paris. His work, along with that of his collaborators, remains a testament to the beauty and diversity of the natural world. This exquisite print is a must-have for any avian enthusiast or collector of historical natural history art.
