World War One humorous postcard by George Ranstead
Humorous illustration on a postcard by George Ranstead, an amateur artist of the Great War who served in the Army Pay Corps and produced a large number of hand drawn postcards during the period. As a girl dreamily contemplates a full moon from the window of her bedroom thinking that her sweetheart is seeing the same thing, wherever he is in France, her other half curses the same moon for providing some very unwelcome light during a nocturnal expedition to lay barbed wire in No Mans Land. The cartoons humour is very much inspired by that of Bruce Bairnsfather, the foremost cartoonist of WWI

A Moonlit Misunderstanding: A Humorous Take on World War One by George Ranstead This delightful postcard, created by amateur artist George Ranstead during the Great War, showcases a charming yet humorous misunderstanding between a couple separated by the vast expanse of the Western Front. The image on the left depicts a young girl gazing out of her bedroom window, lost in thought as she contemplates the full moon and wonders if her sweetheart, off fighting in France, is also gazing at the same celestial body. The tranquil scene is further enhanced by the idyllic image of a white picket fence and a quaint, royal-blue title: 'My Sweetheart's Dream.' On the right side of the postcard, however, the mood shifts dramatically as we find a soldier, cursing the very same moon for its unwelcome illumination. As he and his comrades toil in the dead of night to lay barbed wire in No Man's Land, the moon's light casts an unforgiving glow on their dangerous work. The soldier's grumpy expression and the title 'My Sweetheart's Nightmare' perfectly encapsulate the stark contrast between the romantic notions of war and the harsh realities of life in the trenches. Ranstead's humorous illustration is reminiscent of the work of Bruce Bairnsfather, the foremost cartoonist of World War One, who also used humor to shed light on the absurdities and hardships of the war. This postcard serves as a poignant reminder of the dreams, desires, and challenges that soldiers and their loved ones faced during this pivotal time in history.
