Sketch by Cecil Aldin for his painting of women working at one of the Army Remount Depots under his command in Berkshire during the First World War. The finished painting was later bought by the Imperial War Museum. Aldin was a keen huntsman, renowned for his equestrian and animal paintings. He pioneered the employment of women at these depots with very successful results and at one time had around 500 horses and 100 female workers under his command in the Berkshire area.
