EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning handcolored copperplate stipple engraving is a captivating representation of three distinct bird species: the Wheatear (Oenanthe oenanthe), the Eastern Bluebird (Sialia sialis), and the Red-fronted Barbet (Tricholaema diademata), along with the Pied Puffbird (Notharchus tectus). The illustration is taken from the esteemed "Dictionnaire de Sciences Naturelles: Ornithologie" by Dumont de Sainte-Croix, published in Paris between 1816 and 1830. Jean Gabriel Pretre, a painter of natural history at Empress Josephine's zoo, was responsible for the original artwork. Pretre's meticulous attention to detail is evident in the intricate plumage patterns and lifelike expressions of the birds. The engraving was expertly executed by Rebel, under the direction of Pierre Jean-Francois Turpin, and published by F.G. Levrault. The Wheatear, a small migratory bird, is depicted perched on a rocky outcrop, showcasing its distinctive striped back and rufous underparts. The Eastern Bluebird, with its vibrant blue plumage and distinctive red breast, sits on a branch, while the Red-fronted Barbet and Pied Puffbird are shown in flight. The Red-fronted Barbet is easily identified by its red frontal shield and the Pied Puffbird by its black and white plumage. This exquisite piece of natural history art not only showcases the beauty of these birds but also provides a glimpse into the meticulous scientific illustration techniques of the early 19th century. The intricate stipple engraving process, combined with the delicate handcoloring, results in a visually stunning and historically significant artwork that continues to captivate viewers today.
