EDITORS COMMENTS
Voltaire, the renowned French writer and philosopher, deeply engrossed in the pages of "L'Année Littéraire" (The Literary Year) at his estate in Hildburghausen, Germany. Born as Francois-Marie Arouet in Paris on November 21, 1694, Voltaire's literary career began in earnest in the 1720s, and his philosophical ideas, particularly his advocacy for religious tolerance and reason, would make him one of the most influential figures of the Age of Enlightenment. In this image, Voltaire is depicted in the prime of his life, with his distinctive white wig and a serious expression as he reads intently from the annual literary review. "L'Année Littéraire," published in Germany, was an important source of information for Voltaire and other intellectuals of the time, providing critical analyses of the latest literary and philosophical works. Voltaire's estate in Hildburghausen, located in present-day Thuringia, Germany, was a refuge for him during the latter years of his life. He sought refuge there in 1753, after being banished from Paris for his outspokenness. Despite the challenges he faced, Voltaire continued to write and engage in intellectual discourse, producing some of his most famous works during his time in exile. This evocative portrait captures the essence of Voltaire's dedication to literature and philosophy, and his unwavering commitment to the pursuit of knowledge and truth. The image serves as a poignant reminder of the enduring influence of the Enlightenment thinkers and their ideas, which continue to shape our modern world.
