EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning handcolored illustration, drawn and lithographed by Paul Mercuri with text by Camille Bonnard, presents the vestments of a Catholic cardinal from the 15th century. The illustration, taken from the book "Historical Costumes from the 12th to 15th Centuries," published by Levy Fils in Paris in 1860, offers a fascinating glimpse into the opulence and grandeur of the Catholic Church during this period. At the center of the illustration, the cardinal is depicted wearing a distinctive hat, known as the "galero," which is adorned with red tassels and ermine fur. The galero signifies the cardinal's high rank within the Church. Over his shoulders, the cardinal wears a long, flowing cape, called a "pellegrina," which is edged with ermine fur and lined with crimson velvet. The cape is held closed with a brooch, often in the shape of a cross. Beneath the cape, the cardinal wears a hood, or "cappa magna," which is also lined with ermine fur and features a large, decorative tassel. The hood is worn over a rochet, a long-sleeved shirt made of fine fabric, and a cassock, a long, loose-fitting garment that is typically made of wool. The cassock is also lined with ermine fur and features a wide, decorative border. The intricate details of the vestments, from the rich fabrics and furs to the ornate decorations, serve as a testament to the wealth and power of the Catholic Church during the 15th century. The illustration offers a unique and captivating portrait of the fashion and history of this important period in European history.
