EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite lithograph depicts Trionyx sewaare, an African softshell turtle, taken from Plate 36 of the esteemed "Reptiles of India, China, Vol I" publication. The plate was bequeathed to the collection by Major General Thomas Hardwicke, an influential figure in the British military and natural history circles during the 18th and early 19th centuries. The intricately detailed illustration showcases the unique features of this remarkable reptile, which is native to the Nile region in East Africa. The Trionyx sewaare, also known as the Nile softshell turtle, is a member of the Trionychidae family, characterized by its distinctive soft, flattened shell that is more akin to a paddle than the typical hard, protective carapace found in other turtles. The lithograph, produced between 1755 and 1835, is a testament to the exceptional craftsmanship and scientific accuracy of the time. The Sauropsida order, to which the Trionyx sewaare belongs, is an ancient group of reptiles, with the first known records dating back to the Late Carboniferous period. The Cryptodira suborder, which includes the Trionyx, evolved later, around the Late Triassic period. Major General Hardwicke, a major figure in the British military, was also an avid naturalist and collector. His extensive collection of natural history specimens, including this beautiful lithograph, is a valuable addition to our understanding of the natural world during this period. The Trionyx sewaare continues to be an important species in the study of reptiles, providing valuable insights into the evolution and diversity of the Sauropsida and Testudines orders.
