EDITORS COMMENTS
This handcolored copperplate stipple engraving depicts the Siberian musk deer, Moschus moschiferus, a vulnerable and dwarf species of deer native to the forests of northern Asia. The image is taken from Frederic Cuvier's "Dictionary of Natural Science: Mammals," published in Paris, France, in 1816. The illustration was created by Jean Gabriel Pretre, a painter of natural history at Empress Josephine's zoo, and later became the artist to the Museum of Natural History. The engraving was executed by Nargeot, under the direction of Pierre Jean-Francois Turpin, and published by F.G. Levrault. The Siberian musk deer, also known as the Moschus moschiferus, is a small and agile deer with a distinctive, elongated snout and a coat that ranges from brown to grayish-brown. They are named for the musk glands located under their tail, which produce a strong-smelling substance used in traditional medicine and perfumes. These deer are found in the forests of Russia, China, and Mongolia, and are considered vulnerable due to habitat loss and poaching for their musk. Another closely related species, the Chinese forest musk deer, Moschus berezovskii, is also depicted in this volume of Cuvier's Dictionary. The Chinese forest musk deer, also known as the Moschus berezovskii, is found in the forests of China and is considered endangered due to habitat loss and poaching. Both species are important components of their respective ecosystems and play a crucial role in maintaining the balance of their forest habitats. This beautiful and intricately detailed engraving is a testament to the skill and artistry of the natural history illustrators and engravers of the early 19th century, and serves as a reminder of the importance of preserving the world's diverse and fascinating wildlife.
