EDITORS COMMENTS
In this historic photograph, Commander Charles Rumney Samson boldly takes off in the Short S.38 from the deck of HMS Hibernia, marking the first-ever flight from a moving British ship. The date is May 9, 1912, and the location is Weymouth, England. Commander Samson, a pioneering aviator, is at the helm of the Short S.38, a two-seat biplane that was specifically designed for naval use. The Short Brothers, the aircraft manufacturing company, had built this aircraft with the Royal Navy in mind, aiming to provide a means of scouting and reconnaissance from the sea. The Short S.38 was launched from a specially designed ramp on the deck of HMS Hibernia, a cruiser that was anchored in the English Channel. The ramp was angled at a steep incline to help the aircraft gain enough speed for takeoff. With the crew of the ship cheering him on, Commander Samson revved up the engine and taxied the plane to the edge of the ramp. As the ship began to move forward, he released the brakes and took to the sky, becoming the first person to fly an aircraft from a moving ship in British history. The successful takeoff marked a significant milestone in the development of naval aviation. It paved the way for the use of aircraft carriers, which would become an essential component of modern naval warfare. Commander Samson's courage and skill in this groundbreaking flight cemented his place in aviation history.
