This print depicts Auguste Michel Etienne Regnault de Saint-Jean d'Angely (1794-1870), a distinguished French military commander who rose to the rank of marechal de France during the tumultuous period of the French Revolution and the Napoleonic Wars. Born in Angoulême, France, Regnault de Saint-Jean began his military career in the Napoleonic army, where he quickly gained recognition for his bravery and strategic acumen. He served in various campaigns under the command of Napoleon Bonaparte, including the Peninsular War and the Waterloo campaign. After the fall of Napoleon, Regnault de Saint-Jean remained a loyal servant of the Bourbon monarchy, and was appointed governor of several important French provinces. He played a key role in quelling various rebellions and maintaining order during the turbulent Restoration period. In 1830, he was promoted to the rank of marechal de France, the highest military rank in the French army, by King Louis-Philippe. Regnault de Saint-Jean's military career was marked by his unwavering loyalty to the French monarchy and his ability to maintain order in times of chaos. He was a respected and influential figure in French military and political circles, and his legacy continues to be celebrated in French military history.
