EDITORS COMMENTS
The Pyramid of Djoser, also known as the Step Pyramid, is an architectural marvel and a testament to the ancient Egyptian civilization's engineering prowess. Located in the Saqqara necropolis, this pyramid was built around 2660 BC for Pharaoh Djoser (or Zoser), the ruler of Egypt during the Old Kingdom period. The Step Pyramid is considered the oldest stone pyramid in Egypt and the prototype for the classic pyramid shape that would become a hallmark of Egyptian architecture. Unlike the later, more uniformly shaped pyramids, the Step Pyramid is composed of six tiers of mastabas (flat-roofed, rectangular structures) stacked one on top of the other, giving it a distinctive stepped appearance. The pyramid is believed to have been designed by the architect Imhotep, who is also credited with the title of "Chief Architect, Sealer, and Overseeer of the Works of the House of the King." Imhotep's innovative design revolutionized the way pyramids were built, and the Step Pyramid marked the beginning of the pyramid complexes that would become synonymous with ancient Egyptian burial sites. The desert landscape surrounding the Step Pyramid adds to its mystique and sense of history. The arid conditions have preserved the structure remarkably well, allowing us to appreciate its intricate details and the craftsmanship of its builders. Today, the Pyramid of Djoser stands as a symbol of ancient Egyptian civilization and a source of inspiration for architects and engineers around the world. This photograph, taken in the 1910s, captures the majesty and grandeur of the Step Pyramid, transporting us back in time to a world of ancient wonders and architectural marvels.
