EDITORS COMMENTS
"This evocative image captures the moment of divine revelation at the Temple of Apollo in Delphi, during the Pyhthoness ceremony. The Pythia, or Oracle, is depicted in a state of intense agony as she sits upon the tripod, the traditional seat of the Pythia during her divination sessions. Surrounding her are other prophets, their faces etched with concentration and anticipation. The Temple of Apollo, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, was renowned as the center of the ancient Greek world for its oracle, where the Pythia would deliver prophecies inspired by Apollo. The Pythia's prophecies were highly sought after by rulers, generals, and ordinary people alike, as they were believed to provide guidance and insight into the future. The exact methods of the Pythia's divination are shrouded in mystery, but it is believed that she would inhale the fumes from a chasm in the temple, which were thought to inspire her prophetic trance. The Pythia's prophecies were delivered in a cryptic and poetic manner, and were often interpreted by a priest or priestess. This image offers a glimpse into the awe-inspiring and otherworldly atmosphere of the Temple of Apollo during the Pyhthoness ceremony. The agony and intensity on the Pythia's face underscore the profound significance of the moment, as she delivers the words of the gods to the world." Date: 8 B.C.
