Born on March 12, 1836, in London, Poynter's artistic talent was recognized early in his life. He studied under the tutelage of Thomas Leighton Clark and later at the Royal Academy Schools. Poynter's artistic style was characterized by his mastery of light and color, as well as his ability to capture the human form with great sensitivity and emotion.
