EDITORS COMMENTS
Pope Julius II, born Giuliano della Rovere in 1443, assumed the papal throne in 1503 after a long and intriguing political career. This striking portrait, titled "Fursten," captures the intensity and strength of character that defined his papacy. Born into a noble family, Giuliano was educated in law and theology before entering the Church. He rose through the ranks, becoming a cardinal in 1471. However, his ambitions went beyond the Church, and he was involved in numerous political intrigues and power struggles. When Pope Alexander VI died in 1503, Giuliano, who had been a key player in the Borgia family's rise to power, saw an opportunity to claim the papacy for himself. He engineered a conspiracy against the favored candidate, and was elected Pope Julius II. Julius II is best known for his military campaigns, which aimed to expand the Papal States and assert the Church's temporal power. He hired Michelangelo to paint the Sistine Chapel ceiling and commissioned Raphael to decorate the Vatican Palace. Despite his military successes and artistic patronage, Julius II was a controversial figure. He was known for his harshness and his willingness to use violence to achieve his goals. In this portrait, painted around 1510, Julius II is depicted as a powerful and regal figure, with a stern expression and a flowing beard. His robes are adorned with the symbols of his office, including the papal tiara and the keys of St. Peter. Julius II's reign ended in 1513, and he died a few months later. Despite his controversial legacy, he is remembered as a dynamic and influential figure in the history of the Church and of Europe.
