Amidst the backdrop of the First World War, which had commenced just a few months prior, the new Pope made a profound proposal for an exchange of prisoners between the combatant nations. The First World War, also known as the First Great War or WWI, had engulfed Europe and its colonies since July 1914. The brutalities and atrocities of war had left countless soldiers incapacitated, unable to continue their military service. Pope Benedict XV, a man of peace and compassion, saw an opportunity to alleviate some of the suffering. On November 1, 1914, the Pope issued an encyclical titled "Ad Apostolorum Principis," in which he proposed an exchange of all prisoners of war who were no longer able to fight.
