EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisitely hand-colored engraving on steel depicts the Pampas or Azara's Fox, Lycalopex gymnocercus, a fascinating and elusive mammal native to South America. The image is taken from a drawing by Colonel Charles Hamilton Smith, made during the 1830s for Sir William Jardine's Naturalist's Library: Dogs, published by W.H. Lizars in Edinburgh in 1839. The Pampas Fox, also known as the Azara's Fox or the South American Red Fox, is a medium-sized canid that inhabits the grasslands and pampas of Argentina and Uruguay. This fox is characterized by its reddish-brown coat, black-tipped ears, and bushy tail. The species is well adapted to its environment, with long, slender legs that allow it to move swiftly through the grasslands, and sharp, curved claws that enable it to dig burrows for shelter. The Pampas Fox is an important part of the South American ecosystem, playing a role in controlling rodent populations and helping to maintain the balance of the grasslands. Unfortunately, the species has faced threats from habitat loss and hunting, leading to population declines in some areas. This beautiful engraving not only showcases the natural history of the Pampas Fox but also highlights the skill and artistry of the engraver, William Lizars, and the naturalist, Colonel Charles Hamilton Smith. The intricate details of the fox's coat, ears, and tail are captured in stunning detail, making this a valuable addition to any collection of natural history prints.
