EDITORS COMMENTS
Marguerite de France, Queen of Hungary (1165-1211), leads the Hungarian army on the Fourth Crusade in this evocative image from the annals of medieval history. The daughter of King Louis VI of France, Marguerite was married to Bela III of Hungary in 1186, becoming the queen consort of Hungary. When Bela died in 1196, Marguerite took the reins of power and led the Hungarian forces in the Fourth Crusade, which was originally intended to liberate the Holy Land from the Muslims but ended up sacking Constantinople instead. The print depicts a determined and resolute Marguerite, dressed in regal attire and mounted on horseback, surrounded by her loyal soldiers, including knights and commoners, as well as children and a faithful dog. The Hungarian queen is shown raising her right hand in a gesture of command, while her left hand holds a cross, symbolizing her religious devotion and the crusading cause. Her soldiers follow her boldly, their faces set with determination and resolve. The Fourth Crusade, which took place between 1202 and 1204, was a turning point in European history and marked the end of the Middle Ages. Marguerite's leadership during this time was a testament to her strength, courage, and political acumen, making her a significant figure in medieval history. Despite the ultimate failure of the crusade to achieve its original goal, Marguerite's legacy as a powerful and capable queen continues to inspire and intrigue historians and scholars to this day.
