EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the intense rivalry between the Oxford and Cambridge rowing teams during the historic Boat Race of 1912. The Oxford team, depicted on the left, consists of six rowers and a coxswain. In the back row are Frederick A. H. Pitman (bow), Archibald H. M. Wedderburn (5), and Edward D. Horsfall (4). In the front row are Arthur F. R. Wiggins (6), Lionel G. Wormald (3), Robert C. Bourne (stroke), Charles W. B. Littlejohn (7), and Cecil E. Tinne (2). The team's coxswain, Herbert B. Wells, is seated on the ground. The Cambridge team, shown on the right, includes a coxswain, five rowers, and a spare man. In the back row are Charles A. Skinner (cox.), Sidney E. Swann (stroke), John H. Goldsmith (5), and David C. Collins (2). In the front row are Henry M. Heyland (3), Robert le Blanc Smith (6), Robert W. M. Arbuthnot (bow), Leslie S. Lloyd (7), and Richard S. Shove (4). The spare man, John Ayliff, is seated on the ground. The teams' outfits reflect the Edwardian era, with the rowers wearing sleeveless shirts, breeches, and boat shoes, while the coxswains don caps and blazers. The Boat Race, a highly anticipated annual competition between the two universities, dates back to 1829 and continues to be a cherished tradition in British sporting history.
