The Princess, who was born in Copenhagen, Denmark, on December 1, 1844, was the eldest daughter of Prince Christian of Schleswig-Holstein and Princess Louise Rasmussen-Levetzau. In this portrait, Princess Alexandra is depicted in her youthful beauty, wearing an elegant and ornate gown adorned with intricate lace and embroidery. The Princess's engagement to the Prince of Wales, later King Edward VII, was announced on December 3, 1861, and the couple's wedding took place on March 10, 1863, at the Chapel Royal in St. James's Palace, London.
