EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite pencil drawing depicts the Red-fronted Parakeet, Cyanoramphus novaezelandiae, as captured during the second voyage of the renowned British explorer, Captain James Cook (1728-1779). The illustration was created by the naturalist Johann Georg Adam Forster (1754-1794) during Cook's expedition to explore the southern continent between 1772 and 1775. Forster meticulously annotated the drawing with the scientific name Psittacus pacificus. The Red-fronted Parakeet is a native of New Zealand and is characterized by its distinctive red frontal feathers, which contrast sharply with its predominantly green plumage. This parakeet is perched on a branch, showcasing its vibrant colors and intricate feather details. Forster's illustration is a testament to the rich biodiversity discovered during Cook's voyages. The 18th century was a time of great exploration and discovery, as Europeans sought to expand their knowledge of the world and its inhabitants. The Sauropsida order, to which the parrot and parakeet belong, was only recently identified during this period, and these illustrations played a crucial role in documenting and categorizing new species. This drawing by Forster is a rare glimpse into the past, offering a glimpse into the world of avian wonders that Cook's expeditions uncovered. With its intricate details and beautiful colors, it remains an enduring reminder of the spirit of adventure and discovery that characterized the 18th century.
