EDITORS COMMENTS
This intriguing antique sign, dating back to 1875, bears the image of a playful dog and a duck, both engaged in an apparent game of interaction. The sign once belonged to the historic Dog and Duck tavern, which was built in the heart of St. George's Fields, London, during the 17th century. Named after the popular sport of duck-baiting that took place in the adjacent wetlands, the tavern was a hub of local activity and community gatherings. Duck-baiting was a blood sport that involved training dogs to catch and kill ducks that were lured out of the water by means of decoys. The practice was a common form of entertainment in England during the 16th to 18th centuries, and the Dog and Duck tavern was a fitting name for an establishment located near such a venue. However, the sport of duck-baiting, along with other blood sports, was eventually outlawed in 1835. The Dog and Duck tavern, too, lost its licence in 1799, and the sign now serves as a reminder of a bygone era. The sign is currently part of the collection of the Cuming Museum on Walworth Road, London. Unfortunately, the museum closed due to a fire in 2013, leaving the future of this historical artifact uncertain.
