EDITORS COMMENTS
This handcoloured lithograph depicts the Red-bellied Tamarin, Sanguinus labiatus rufiventer, a small primate native to the rainforests of South America. The Red-bellied Tamarin is a member of the callitrichidae family, also known as marmosets and tamarins. They are known for their distinctive red bellies, which contrast sharply with the rest of their fur, which is a mix of gray, brown, and white. The Red-bellied Tamarin is found in the eastern Amazon Basin, from Brazil to Peru. They live in groups of up to 20 individuals, which are led by an alpha male and female. These primates are omnivorous, feeding on fruits, insects, and small vertebrates. They are also known to use tools, using sticks to extract insects from tree bark. This illustration is from Carl Hoffmann's "Buch der Welt," or "Book of the World," published in Stuttgart, Germany, in 1848. Hoffmann was a German naturalist and explorer who traveled extensively throughout South America, documenting the natural history of the region. This image, along with the others in the book, was produced using the lithographic process, which allowed for detailed and accurate reproductions of the natural world. The Red-bellied Tamarin is an important species in the rainforest ecosystem, and their populations are threatened by habitat loss and fragmentation. Conservation efforts are underway to protect their habitats and ensure the survival of this fascinating and unique primate.
