EDITORS COMMENTS
This vintage photograph captures the Golden Eagle Public House, located in Finchley, London, in the 1960s. The image showcases the iconic Golden Eagle sign proudly displayed above the entrance of the pub, which was a popular watering hole during that era. The pub, which was owned by the Charrington and Company Limited, was a beloved local institution that drew in patrons with its welcoming atmosphere and traditional English pub fare. The photograph, taken in the 1960s, depicts the pub's exterior, with the Golden Eagle sign illuminated against the night sky. The building's red brick walls and large windows add to its inviting appearance. The pub, which was known as "Goldies" to the locals, was a staple of the Finchley community and a gathering place for friends and neighbors. Unfortunately, the Golden Eagle Public House, like many historic buildings in London, did not survive the test of time. As of July 2018, the pub had been demolished and replaced by a Holiday Inn hotel. This photograph serves as a poignant reminder of a bygone era, when neighborhood pubs were the heart of local communities and a place where people could come together to share a pint and a story. The back of the print includes important details for those interested in the history of the Golden Eagle Public House. It includes the photographer ID for the image, the location and postal code of the pub, as well as the date the photograph was taken. This information adds context and authenticity to the image, making it a valuable addition to any collection of vintage photographs or memorabilia related to London's rich history.
