EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning handcoloured lithograph depicts the Paris Peacock Butterfly, Papilio paris, and the Mottled Emigrant Butterfly, Catopsilia pyranthe, two exquisite species of Lepidoptera discovered in the 19th century. The Paris Peacock Butterfly, also known as the Swallowtail Peacock, is characterized by its vibrant blue and orange wings, with intricate black lines and eyespots. The Mottled Emigrant, also known as the Common Emigrant or the Pyranthus Swallowtail, is distinguished by its mottled brown and orange wings, with a distinctive black line running through the middle. The Paris Peacock Butterfly was first described by the English naturalist John O. Westwood in 1837, in the new edition of Dru Drury's Illustrations of Exotic Entomology published by Bohn, London. The Mottled Emigrant was also described and illustrated in the same publication. The intricate details of the butterflies' wings are beautifully captured in this lithograph, with the ventral (under) and dorsal (upper) sides of both species depicted. The Paris Peacock Butterfly's wings are shown open in flight, while the Mottled Emigrant's wings are closed, revealing the intricate patterns on the underside. The Paris Peacock Butterfly is native to India and Southeast Asia, while the Mottled Emigrant is found in Africa and southern Europe. Both species are part of the Swallowtail family, Papilionidae, and are important pollinators in their respective ecosystems. This handcoloured lithograph is a testament to the beauty and diversity of the natural world, and a reminder of the important role that naturalists and illustrators played in documenting and preserving the natural history of the past. The intricate details and vibrant colors make this a truly captivating work of art, and a valuable addition to any collection of natural history or entomology.
