EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning hand-colored copperplate stipple engraving, titled "Polpo comune, Polpo muschiato, Totano sepiola, Totano di Cranch, Vallisneria spiralis, Spirale Stanghi," is a captivating representation of various octopus and squid species, as depicted in Antoine Laurent de Jussieu's "Dizionario delle Scienze Naturali" or "Dictionary of Natural Science," published in Florence, Italy, in 1837. The illustration, engraved by Corsi and drawn by Jean Gabriel Pretre under the direction of Pierre Jean-Francois Turpin, showcases the Common octopus (Octopus vulgaris) in the top left corner, its eight arms and two long tentacles spread out in a mesmerizing display. Next to it is the Musky octopus (Eledone moschata), with its shorter arms and more rounded body. Moving on to the squid species, the European Flying Squid (Todarodes sagittatus) is depicted in the top right corner, its wings spread wide, while the Glass Squid (Cranchia scabra) is shown in the bottom left corner, its transparent body and arms creating an ethereal effect. Turpin (1775-1840), a renowned French botanical illustrator of the 19th century, expertly captured the intricate details of these enchanting marine creatures, providing a glimpse into the natural world of the past. The vibrant colors and meticulous shading in this illustration bring the underwater realm to life, making it a true masterpiece of scientific art.
