EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite hand-colored copperplate engraving by Johann Georg Klinger, titled "Die Schmetterlinge in Abbildungen nach der Natur" (The Butterflies in Representations according to Nature), was published in Erlangen, Germany, in 1786 by Eugenius Johann Christoph Espers. The engraving showcases various species of moths, including the muslin footman moths, Nudaria mundana, and the oak eggar moth, Lasiocampa quercifolia. The muslin footman moths, depicted as a male and two females, are named for their distinctive muslin-like hindwings. The males, with their humped and prominent forewings, are shown on the left side of the image. The females, with their more subdued wing markings, are on the right. The oak eggar moths are depicted in various stages of their life cycle. A female oak eggar moth is shown in the middle of the image, along with her larvae (caterpillars) numbered 4, 5, and pupa numbered 6. The pupa, or chrysalis, is shown in its final stage, just before the emergence of the adult moth. The oak eggar moth, Lasiocampa quercifolia, is a notodontid moth, also known as a prominently marked moth, due to the prominent markings on its wings. The larvae of this species are known to feed on various plants, including turnip, agrotis segetum, and phalaena oleagina. This beautiful engraving is an excellent example of the intricate detail and artistry that was used in the documentation of insects during the 18th century. The hand-coloring adds an additional layer of beauty and realism to the already stunning engraving. Entomology collectors and enthusiasts of natural history will appreciate the accuracy and attention to detail in this rare and valuable work.
