Memorial to CSM Stan Hollis VC Green Howards

Stan Hollis was the only man to win the VC on D-Day. He landed here with D Company of the 6th Battalion. Thinking that the original hut was a German pill box he fired the entire drum of his Lewis gun at it only to discover, as he put it, it was only a bloody tram stop. Hollis survived the war. The Memorial on the renovated hut was unveiled on 8 June 2006 in the presence of Hollis son, Brian. Date: 2009

EDITORS COMMENTS
This poignant photograph captures the Memorial to CSM Stan Hollis VC, the only British soldier to be awarded the Victoria Cross on D-Day. The image shows the renovated hut at Gold Beach in Normandy, France, where Hollis and D Company of the 6th Battalion, Green Howards, landed on June 6, 1944. In the heat of battle, Hollis mistook the original hut for a German pill box and fired an entire drum of his Lewis gun at it. To his surprise, it was only a British tram stop. Despite this error, Hollis' bravery and quick thinking saved his men from potential harm. The Memorial was unveiled on June 8, 2006, in a moving ceremony attended by Hollis' son, Brian. The hut now stands as a testament to the heroism and sacrifice of Hollis and his comrades during the D-Day landings. The Memorial serves as a reminder of the pivotal role the Green Howards played in the Allied invasion of Normandy and the significant impact of individual courage in the face of adversity.
