EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the 8th Battalion of the Leicester Regiment, part of Kitchener's New Army, in the process of dismantling their bivouacs at Wokingham during World War I. Established in response to the unprecedented need for manpower following the outbreak of war in 1914, Kitchener's Army, also known as the New Army or the Second Army, was formed to supplement the regular British Army. The 8th Battalion of the Leicester Regiment was among the many units raised during this period of mass recruitment. The soldiers in this image are seen working diligently to dismantle their temporary shelters, a task that would have been essential as they prepared to move to their next location. The bivouacs, made up of tents and other temporary structures, would have provided some measure of protection against the elements during their time in the field. The scene is reminiscent of the makeshift camps that became a common sight across Europe during the First World War, as armies on both sides moved from one battlefront to another. The soldiers, dressed in their uniforms and carrying their equipment, appear focused and determined, a testament to the resilience and adaptability of the men who answered the call to serve their country. This photograph offers a glimpse into the daily life of the soldiers of the 8th Battalion of the Leicester Regiment, providing a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made by the men and women who served during the First World War. The image is part of The John Barrett Collection held by Mary Evans Picture Library and offers a valuable historical record of this pivotal period in world history.
