EDITORS COMMENTS
This chromolithograph showcases a harmonious gathering of four distinct woodpecker species: the Hairy Woodpecker (Dryobates villosus), Downy Woodpecker (Dryobates pubescens), and Red-bellied Woodpecker (Melanerpes carolinus). The Hairy Woodpecker, depicted as a male, boasts a prominent crest, black-and-white plumage, and a distinct yellow patch on the back of its head. The Downy Woodpecker, with two males and one female present, is easily identified by its small size, black-and-white striped back, and a red patch on the nape of the males. The Red-bellied Woodpecker, also shown as a male, is characterized by its red cap, black-and-white striped back, and, as the name suggests, a red belly. Originally illustrated by the renowned ornithological artist John James Audubon, this piece was published in Benjamin Harry Warren's Report on the Birds of Pennsylvania in 1890 by E.K. Mayers in Harrisburg. The intricate details and vibrant colors of this 19th-century lithograph serve as a testament to the remarkable craftsmanship of the time. The Hairy, Downy, and Red-bellied Woodpeckers are all native to North America, and their presence in this illustration highlights the rich biodiversity of the United States. The Sapsucker (Sphyrapicus varius) and other woodpecker species are also commonly found in various wooded habitats across the continent. This image offers a glimpse into the natural history of these fascinating birds and the meticulous ornithological work of the past.
