EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning hand-colored lithograph showcases an enchanting assembly of exotic beetles, meticulously captured in John O. Westwood's new edition of Dru Drury's Illustrations of Exotic Entomology, published by Bohn, London, in 1837. The image features four distinct species of beetles: Mecynorrhinella torquata, or the Flower Beetle; Agrilinus rufus; Rutela lineola; and Macraspis cincta. The Flower Beetle, Mecynorrhinella torquata, is depicted gracefully perched atop a flower, its vibrant, iridescent elytra (wing cases) shimmering in the light. These beetles are known for their unique ability to mimic the appearance of various flowers, providing them with excellent camouflage. Next to the Flower Beetle, the Agrilinus rufus, or the Red-spotted Agrilinus, can be found. This beetle is characterized by its elongated body and the distinct red spots adorning its elytra. The Rutela lineola, or the Striped Rutela, is the third beetle in this composition. Its elytra are adorned with intricate, alternating stripes, creating a mesmerizing pattern. Lastly, the Macraspis cincta, or the Ringed Macraspis, is shown with its elytra raised, revealing the intricate patterns on its thorax and abdomen. The species is named for the distinct ring-like markings on its body. This exquisite lithograph is a testament to the intricate beauty and diversity of the Coleoptera (beetle) order, showcasing the meticulous attention to detail that was prevalent during the 19th century in the field of entomology.
